Developing a Concept
The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) has engaged Landrum and Brown to conduct a comprehensive $1.3 million study that will guide development of its six-facility airport system:
Completed by the end of 2010, the study will also evaluate the potential for creating an ”aerotropolis” at Indianapolis International.
Dr. John Kasarda of the University of North Carolina pioneered the aerotropolis concept, which is an urban development comprising aviation-intensive businesses and related enterprises surrounding an airport. Regional drivers of economic development, cities like Dallas, Memphis, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. are putting the concept into action, as are cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Seoul, Dubai, and Bangkok.

The LandINSight planning process will not only explore what is happening with aviation-related development in other U.S. cities, but will consider what enterprises will work best in Central Indiana, based on current and forecasted market conditions and demographics. It will, of course, also be mindful of aviation needs and requirements, such as airport operations, airspace protection, noise, safety, transportation, and the environment.
